The Lassen-Modoc-Plumas Fire Prevention Bureau falls
under the direction and supervision of the Lassen-Modoc-Plumas
Operations Officer. Included in the Bureau are one battalion
chief, three fire captains and a fire prevention specialist.
The Bureau is actively involved in all areas of fire
prevention, and coordinates the Volunteers
in Prevention (VIP) Program which currently
has 55 members. VIPs can be found throughout the local
community; in schools teaching K-3rd graders, at local
fairs and parades, at special events sponsored by local
fire departments - anywhere they can educate the public
about fire safety and prevention.
The Bureau is also responsible for Land Use Planning,
including working with private land owners and developers
to ensure compliance with the minimum fire safety standards
relating to defensible space around property and structures
residing within local and state responsibility areas.
Expansion of the wildland-urban mixed interface has
increased the potential for even small fires to produce
large losses. Strategic planning for development and
construction offers the opportunity to limit structural
losses from wildfires. The Bureau works with county
building departments to ensure standards are met for
road access to property, signs, and fire water storage.
They also work in conjunction with the Unit's Resource
Management Program to develop fuel breaks
and greenbelts.
Law Enforcement is another area of responsibility for
the Bureau, and includes fire investigation, issuing
citations, processing criminal cases for disposition
by the courts, and civil cost collection for fire suppression.
This money is returned to the State's General Fund.
The Bureau is responsible for Pre-Fire Engineering.
These duties include GIS mapping projects, developing
the units fire management plan, grant writing and working
closely with Lassen County Fire Safe Council's in developing
and implementing fuels reduction projects.
The Fire Prevention Bureau works to reduce the incidence
and extent of fires by preventing them from occurring
through education, patrol and code enforcement. Lassen-Modoc-Plumas
Unit is proud of their efforts and achievements in fire
prevention.
