Lassen-Modoc-Plumas Unit

Scott Rosikiewicz, Forester II
(530) 294-5110
Ivan Houser, Area Forester
(530) 257-8504

Responsible for the entire Resource Management Program within the Unit. Also responsible for the Vegetation Management Program within the Unit.

The Unit encompasses a wide range of natural resources from the alpine forests above 7,000 feet to the sagebrush steppes of the Great Basin at 4,000 feet.  It includes the upper watersheds of the Feather, Pit, Klamath and Susan Rivers.  Annual rainfall averages 50 inches in the Almanor Basin increasing to eight inches along the Nevada border.  Much of the Unit falls within the Modoc Plateau which averages 18 to 28 inches of precipitation and includes the majority of eastside pine type in California and is an area subject to prolonged droughts and numerous lightning fires, resulting in at least one large, damaging wildfire a year.

The Resource Management Staff provides enforcement for the California Forest Practice Act.  Staff review Timber Harvesting Plans (THP) submitted to CAL FIRE by Registered Professional Foresters (RPF) representing private landowners wishing to harvest trees from their commercial timberlands. Once a THP is approved, the CAL FIRE Staff Forester enforces the required environmental mitigations and regulations including those rules that protect the forest from accidental operational fires.

The staff also provides information, advice and cost-share assistance to the small timberland owner through the CAL FIRE Service Forestry program.  This wide reaching service can help provide an answer from "What is wrong with my tree?" to "How can I get started in managing my 5,000 acre tree farm?"  Currently, there are four cost-share programs: one managed by CAL FIRE and three federal programs where CAL FIRE is an advisor.  Each program is aimed at either the owner of a forest up to 5,000 acres, or a rancher with a woodland component, or the 20 acre woodland owner in a rural subdivision.  Each program provides matching funds for reforestation, pre-commercial thinning or pruning, and wildlife enhancement.  Additional information can be obtained by visiting the CAL FIRE website for Resource Management at
www.fire.ca.gov/ResourceManagement or by calling the Staff forester representing your area.
